    Monsters Dance Conventions is the only all hip hop dance event, offering instruction from industry professionals and giving dancers real opportunities!

     

    Monsters Dance tours the country with its two-day dance workshops instructed by its world renowned faculty of choreographers, plus auditions for thousands of dollars in scholarships, seminars, performance opportunities, freestyle battles, and much more!

    Our mission is to bring hip hop dancers together with the industry’s top dance professionals in a fun and challenging environment that fosters self-fulfillment and career development.

  • WHO WE ARE

    Monsters Dance was started by Andy and Becky Funk with Becky’s sister, Angie Worley. Collectively, the three developed the unique concept for Monsters Dance based on Becky and Angie’s background in competitive dance, and Andy’s experience in business and marketing. They saw a need, took a chance and created a Monster!

     

    While Monsters has grown tremendously, the company always strives to maintain the family environment on which it was built.

    BECKY & ANDY FUNK

    DIRECTORS & EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS

     

    Yes, that’s really his last name! Andy graduated from Towson State University in 1996 with a double major in Mass Communications and Communication Studies. He worked in a variety of areas from freight logistics and non-profit development to baseball tour guide and major event planning.

     

    In 2002, he left his full-time job to run the family business, a dance studio in Maryland that he and his wife started three years earlier. The entrepreneurial bug would not allow him to stop there and with the help of his wife and sister-in-law, they created Monsters Dance in 2003.

     

    Driven largely by the experience of losing his brother, Alan, to Leukemia in 1990, Andy continues to work hard to make a positive impact and create meaningful opportunities for dancers and individuals throughout the world.

     

    Becky is the dancer in the Funk family and the reason why Monsters exists. Had it not been for Becky leaving her job as a Health Educator to open a dance studio, the idea would have probably never come up. Becky graduated from Towson State University in 1997 with a B.S. degree in Health Science.

     

    After spending so many years dancing competitively, she saw a need for more hip hop classes on the convention circuit and more career opportunities for hip hop dancers. This vision lead to the development of Monsters’ unique format and mission.

     

    In addition to managing two businesses and coaching tee ball, Becky and Andy love spending time with their three boys!

    GENE BURDETTE

    DIRECTOR

     

    Gene joined the Monsters family full time in 2006. A long-time friend and colleague of Andy Funk, Gene was hired to help manage the company’s continued growth and facilitate numerous projects which Monsters has in development. Gene has experience in a variety of fields including marketing, business development, logistics, public relations, information technology & more. He graduated with a Marketing and Business degree from Towson University in 1996, eventually teaming up with Andy Funk while working together at the Baltimore Orioles.

     

    CAROLINE MCCABE

    EVENT & HOSPITALITY MANAGER

     

    Caroline is a 2013 graduate of Florida State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations and minors in Business Administration and Hospitality. After a successful internship with Monsters during the summer of her Junior year at FSU, Monsters was thrilled to welcome her back to a full-time position in 2013. Caroline also completed a successful Leadership Essentials program through Leadership Howard County, a prestigious program for business and career development. Her excellent writing, marketing and public relations skills have brought a fresh approach to the company’s ever-growing brand.

    JULIA WELLING

    EVENT COORDINATOR

     

    Julia grew up in Fort Lauderdale, FL, where she attended numerous dance competitions and conventions with local studios and dance teams. In 2013, she graduated Florida State University, where she received her B.A. in English with minors in Communications and Hospitality Management. Following graduation, Julia relocated to New York City to pursue both dance and communications careers. After completing Public Relations and Editorial internships and a role in White Christmas-The Musical, Julia was thrilled to accept a position at Monsters Dance, where she could combine her love for dance and her academic interests into a fulfilling career.

    These people have been recognized at our events for a variety of reasons, including positive attitude,

    going out of their way for others, facing and overcoming adversity and a general passion for life.
